Ideas of lesbian identity formation

In research about homosexuality as in other social and psychological research, it is important to discuss the experiences of women and men separately. This paper, which is part of a larger research project about the influences of the social political environment on lesbian identity formation, discusses the gender bias inherent in ideas of homosexual identity formation. Such discussion is considered important in a male supremacist, and androcentric society where the experiences of men are treated as though they are the experiences of the human race. For example in research men traditionally set the standards, decided what is significant and appropriate to research and what is appropriate knowledge to pass on or reject (Spender, 1982). In this way female existence and experience is systematically ignored or silenced (Mies, 1983). Such has been the case for lesbian experience.
